[1]   AES, DNA WR RG 94, U.S. Military Academy, 1864, No. 415. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Major General Ethan A. Hitchcock, January 21, 1864, recommending Alexander D. B. Smead. No record of Smead's appointment has been found.
