[1] Copy, ISLA. A note on the bottom of Lincoln's letter reads as follows: ``She applies that Charles H. Veil 9th Penn Reserve orderly to Genl [John F.] Reynolds may be appointed 2nd Lieut in a regular regt.'' Charles H. Veil's appointment as second lieutenant in the First U.S. Cavalry was confirmed by the Senate on April 7, 1864.
