To Joseph Holt
Judge Advocate General please report to me on the evidence of this case A. LINCOLN
Sept. 5, 1864
AES, DNA WR RG 153, Judge Advocate General, LL 2345. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the record of Hiram Richardson sentenced to death for acting as a spy. Part of the record is missing. The White House ledger of courtmartial cases quotes Lincoln's further endorsement of September 26, 1864 (not found), as follows: ``I believe the story this boy tells is true, and I therefore direct his pardon, on his taking the oath of Dec. 8, 1864 .''
