To Joseph Holt [1]

Judge Advocate General please report to me on the evidence of this case A. LINCOLN

Sept. 5, 1864

Annotation

[1]   AES, DNA WR RG 153, Judge Advocate General, LL 2345. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the record of Hiram Richardson sentenced to death for acting as a spy. Part of the record is missing. The White House ledger of courtmartial cases quotes Lincoln's further endorsement of September 26, 1864 (not found), as follows: ``I believe the story this boy tells is true, and I therefore direct his pardon, on his taking the oath of Dec. 8, 1864 [1863].''
