Sec. of War, please see this boy a moment, who says you know him.
Sep. 3. 1864 A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] ALS-F, Los Angeles Times, February 5, 1916. On the back of the card bearing Lincoln's note, Stanton endorsed ``To Capt. [James M.] Moore/Asst QM./To introduce Joseph Doyle/E M Stanton.'' The article accompanying the facsimile identifies Joseph Doyle as ``an awkward farm boy'' whose family ``lived less than a mile'' from Stanton's home in Ohio. Refused admittance to Stanton, he sought the president's assistance and received Lincoln's card of introduction.
