[1] ALS, DLC-RTL. On September 1, 1864, Surgeon General Barnes returned Lincoln's note with the report:
``Respectfully returned with report that Pvt. Joseph Laland 2nd N.Y. Heavy Arty---is not entitled to Discharge on Certificate of Disability.''
This is endorsed by Johnson Van Dyck Middleton, Assistant Surgeon, U.S.A., Acting Medical Director, September 1, 1864:
``Respectfully returned to the Surg. General. This man has been carefully examined by Asst. Surg. [Charles A.] McCall . . . who reports that he is suffering from Rheumatism . . . that there is no organic change but that the use of the limb is some what impaired. . . .'' (DLC-RTL).
