Annotation

[1]   AES, RPB. Lincoln's endorsements are written on a petition for pardon from Private Larry O'Brine, Company E, Second D.C. Volunteers, August 29, 1864. He had been sentenced to three years' imprisonment for desertion. Colonel Charles M. Alexander endorsed on September 2: ``This man has been a poor soldier and deserves punishment---if however he could be returned to the Regt after a few months of labor I may be able to make a better man of him.'' On October 5, 1864, Private Larry O'Brine was ordered to be released from confinement and returned to his regiment (AGO Special Orders No. 333).
