[1]   Copy, ISLA. LINCOLN 's endorsement is written on the back of a letter from Brigadier General Hugh Ewing, Headquarters Second Division, Department of Kentucky, Mumfordsville (Munfordville), Kentucky, June 9, 1864, to Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs:

``I am surprised to find that Capt. Anderson, Qr. Mr. on my staff has beenPage  512 mustered out of service. Since his connection with me he has performed his duty ably, & promptly & I trust he may be reinstated, as I am satisfied he has been misrepresented to the Dept. Could I ask that immediate attention, if this request is favorably considered, be taken in his case, as I cannot dispense with his services.''

Captain George W. Anderson, Jr., assistant quartermaster, was ordered to be discharged on May 30, 1864 (AGO Special Orders No. 191). See Lincoln to Holt, August 25, infra.
