Sec. of War of War [sic], please see & hear Col. Eaton, whom Gen. Grant thinks is one of the best contraband agents. A. LINCOLN

Aug. 12, 1864

Annotation

[1]   ALS-F, John Eaton, Grant, Lincoln, and the Freedmen, p. 178. This note is misdated August 12, 1861, in Tracy, p. 193. According to Eaton's account, Lincoln sent him to Stanton to report on ``Affairs in the [Mississippi] Valley and receive any suggestions he might offer,'' concerning Eaton's work with the freedmen.
