Annotation

[1] ADS-F, John Eaton, Grant, Lincoln, and the Freedmen (1907), p. 187. According to Eaton's account, Lincoln instructed him to ascertain Grant's personal reaction to the possibility of being made a presidential candidate. To this question, Eaton reported Grant as saying, ``They can't compel me to do it!'' (p. 190).
