``Your kind offer by Telegraph on the 6th inst. . . . calls for my grateful acknowledgements.

``Having delayed a little to consult my family and friends, I will now briefly

say that should you deem it necessary to fill the place before the close of the Presidential canvass I must respectfully decline. . . .

``Our friends here . . . think that I cannot well be spared from our all important State canvass, and that I can at present be of more service to you & our cause in Illinois than in New Mexico. . . .'' (DLC-RTL).
