Annotation

[1]   Washington Daily National Intelligencer, August 1, 1864. This reply is misdated July 23, 1864, in Nicolay and Hay (X, 169). Seward wrote Lincoln on July 28, ``The Commander Bertinatti having received his credentials as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Government of the United States, I have taken the liberty of appointing the hour of half past eleven on Saturday next, the 30th instant, for his presentation to you in that quality. . . .'' (DLC-RTL).

At ``11 A.M. Saturday'' Seward wrote: ``Perhaps I ought to remind you that I come up to you soon at 12 o'clock with Chevalier Bertinatti who has a royal letter to deliver that requires no speech.

``He is a warm friend and some kind words that you may say in conversation will be reported at once to Italy.'' (Ibid.).
