Fowler of the Eighty-fourth New York Volunteers answered on July 31: ``Clement [sic] J Myers joined the fourteenth N Y S M December 1863 was detailed as clerk for me last winter while I was Provost Marshal of Culpepper C H Va I found him to be an excellent clerk & accountant & would cheerfully recommend him to your excellency for a clerkship'' (DLC-RTL). The Fourteenth New York State Militia became the Eighty-fourth New York Volunteers on entering federal service.
