Annotation
[1] AES, DNA WR RG 77, Office of Chief of Engineers, Letters Received, S 9240. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from John Schumacher, Washington, July, 1864: ``I most respectfully request of your Excellency an official order for the production and a copy of Lt Col. [Barton S.] Alexander's report to the Bureau of Engineers upon my invention of a Floating Harbor Obstruction etc.'' On the bottom of the page Schumacher added over date of July 28, 1864, ``Genl Delafield will please hand the desired paper to Mr. Josh. B Carter and oblige.'' A further endorsement indicates that the requested copy was forwarded August 1 by Brigadier General Delafield, chief of engineers, to Stanton for transmittal.
