Chattanooga, Tenn. Sept. 24. 10 A.M. 1863
Last night we received the rebel accounts, through Richmond papers, of your late battle. They give Major Genl. Hood, as mortally wounded,2Jump to section and Brigaders Preston Smith, Woolford, Walthall, Helm, of Ky, and Deshler killed;3Jump to section and Major Generals Preston, Cleburne and Greeg,4Jump to section and Brig. Generals Benning, Adams, Bunn, Brown, and John Helm, wounded.5Jump to section By confusion, the two Helms may be the same man, and Bunn and Brown may be the same man. With Burnside, Sherman, and from elsewhere, we shall get to you, from forty to sixty thousand additional men.

[3] Of these only Preston Smith, Ben Hardin Helm, and James Deshler were killed; William T. Wofford and Edward C. Walthall survived.

[5] Henry L. Benning was not killed and no generals by the other names have been identified as killed.
