Carl Schurz and Julius Stahel were appointed major generals of Volunteers on March 14, 1863. AGO Special Orders No. 29, January 19, 1863, assigned Schurz to Sigel's old corps and Stahel to command cavalry in the newly formed Grand Reserve Division under Sigel.
