Annotation

[1]   ALS-P, ISLA. Governor Curtin wrote Lincoln on September 18:

`` . . . The failure to pay the expences of the draft made in this State in 1862 is doing me great injury and may if not corrected controul the result of the election. It is hard that I should suffer personally but for the Governm't it is suicide. There is no antagonism and I am assured that the accounts . . . are just. . . .

``I leave tonight and will be engaged every day until the election. We can carry the election but it will require constant effort and I earnestly ask that the reasonable requests of our State committee meet a ready compliance from your surroundings. . . .'' (DLC-RTL).
