Gen. Burnside Washington, D.C.,
Greenville, Tenn. Sept 21, 1863 [11 A.M.]

If you are to do any good to Rosecrans it will not do to waste time with Jonesboro. It is already too late to do the most good that might have been done, but I hope it will still do some good. Please do not lose a moment. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   ALS, RPB. This second telegram to Burnside was probably sent because Lincoln's attention was called to Burnside's telegram to Halleck on September 17, received on the 19th, which stated ``I go to Greeneville to-night. Dispositions for attacking the enemy at Jonesborough made.'' (OR, I, XXX, III, 718).
