I know nothing as to John Gallagher. The law does not require this class of cases to come before me, and they do not come, unless brought by the friends of the condemned. A. LINCOLN

[1] ALS, RPB. A telegram from Hughey Gallagher received at 12:20 P.M. simply asked, ``Is John Gallagher to be shot Answer please.'' (DLC-RTL). John Gallagher, alias Jacob Watson, Company H, Fourth New Jersey Volunteers, was sentenced to be shot for desertion, September 18, 1863. Reprieved, he deserted again while on furlough in April, 1865.
