I have quite a strong desire for young Pitman to be appointed.

[1]   AES, DNA WR RG 94, U.S. Military Academy, 1862, Box 81, No. 239. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Israel C. Woodruff to John Hay, September 17, 1863, ``In reply to your note . . . to Gen Totten, you are informed that John Pitman of R.I. has not been appointed a Cadet. . . .'' Second Lieutenant John T. Pitman, Jr. of the Eleventh Rhode Island Infantry was appointed to West Point, September 29, 1863, and graduated June 17, 1867.
