Dr.Wm.H.H.Scott Executive Mansion,
Danville, Illinois Washington, Sep. 13. 1863.

Your niece, Mrs. Kate Sharp, can now have no difficulty in going to Knoxville, Tennessee, as that place is within our Military lines.

A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   ALS, RPB. William H. H. Scott wrote Lincoln on August 21, 1863, that his niece ``Mrs Kate Sharp of Louisville Kentucky a widow has since her husband deceased become involved in a law suit in which her entire estate is complicated and finds that important witnesses to the successful defence of her suit are within the Rebel lines. . . . Having failed in her application in Kentucky I earnestly beg as a personal favor to myself as well as to a most excellant woman if not inconsistent with the public interest you would grant her a pass throug[h] our lines to Knoxvill[e] Tennessee & to return to Kentucky. . . .'' (DLC-RTL). A letter from Mrs. Kate Sharpe, written from Frankfort, Kentucky, September 19, is also in the Lincoln Papers.
