Dear and honored Sir: Allow me to express the personal gratification I feel at the receipt of your very kind letter of the 7th of September, and to thank you most cordially for its wise and earnest words of counsel.

Believe me, my dear sir, to be very respectfully and sincerely your friend and servant, A. LINCOLN.

[1]   NH, IX, 118. On September 7 Josiah Quincy of Quincy, Massachusetts, former congressman and president of Harvard University, wrote Lincoln a letter expressing ``gratification & my gratitude for your letter to the Illinois Convention. . . .'' (DLC-RTL).
