Memorandum Concerning William E. Morgan1Jump to section

September 5 and 18, 1863

I know nothing of this particular case. I have said a great many times, that all whose services we receive, should be paid,---but I do not know, nor have I the time to enquire, whether this claim can be lawfully paid or not. If it can, let it be done.

Sep. 5. 1863. A. LINCOLN

I can not properly say more than I have said above.

Sep. 18. 1863. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   AES, PHC. Lincoln's endorsements are written on a letter of Second Lieutenant William E. Morgan, Company D, First District of Columbia Infantry, to Assistant Adjutant General Thomas M. Vincent, August 28, 1863, asking an endorsement which will enable him to collect back pay.
