Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter of Jesse Applegate, Yoncalla, Oregon, to Edward Bates, July 22, 1863, asking his help in obtaining appointment of a son, Daniel Applegate, to West Point. There is no record of Daniel Applegate's appointment.
