[1] ALS, IHi. No correspondence from Mrs. Lincoln has been found which would explain this letter, but it may be inferred that she had interceded in some manner for General Abner Doubleday, who had been removed from command by Meade's Special Orders No. 181, July 5, 1863 (OR, I, XXVII, III, 543). Doubleday was not returned to duty until December, 1863, when he was assigned to duty on court-martials and commissions.
