[1] ALS, owned by Charles W. Olsen, Chicago, Illinois. A letter from Marcus L. Ward, Newark, New Jersey, August 31, 1863, introduced ``Mrs. Dorcas Klaprath a respectable woman residing in this city. She visits Washington in the hope of securing the discharge . . . of her son William J. Klaprath of 143rd Reg N.J. Vols.'' (DLC-RTL). The roster of the One Hundred Forty-third Pennsylvania lists William J. Klasprath as ``Discharged by special order---date unknown,'' but no record of the name as given by Ward or by Lincoln has been found.
