[1]   AES, NAuE. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a note from Seward, September 2, 1863, as follows:

``Dr Nicholl's surroundings are so disloyal as to shake public confidence in himself. Dr Gray of Utica occurs to me as a very proper person.''

Dr. Nicholl has not been identified. See further Lincoln's letter to John P. Gray, September 10, infra.
