Secretary of War, please hand me a full report of this case.
Sep. 1, 1863. A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] AES, DLC-RTL. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Representative Robert H. Duell, August 31, 1863, asking an investigation of the case
of William H. Gray, late corporal of Company D, Twenty-seventh New York Volunteers, arrested and confined in the Old Capitol Prison. Numerous other endorsements represent the reports of authorities, to the effect that Gray was a ``Sharper,'' with a carpetbag filled with ``card photographs, fancy pictures and songs,'' who had obtained a pass ``for the purpose of seeing sick brother'' allegedly in the Army of the Potomac.
