[1] ALS, owned by Charles W. Olsen, Chicago, Illinois. No reply has been discovered. Captain Joseph Carbery Lay was cashiered on July 21, 1862, for being drunk on duty and breach of arrest. Reappointed a second lieutenant in the Seventeenth Infantry on October 30, 1863, he served until he resigned as first lieutenant on September 12, 1864.
