I am told that Carbery Lay, a Captain in the 12th. Regular Infantry has been dismissed by a Court-Martial. Please get the record, and examine the case & report to me. Yours truly

[1]   ALS, owned by Charles W. Olsen, Chicago, Illinois. No reply has been discovered. Captain Joseph Carbery Lay was cashiered on July 21, 1862, for being drunk on duty and breach of arrest. Reappointed a second lieutenant in the Seventeenth Infantry on October 30, 1863, he served until he resigned as first lieutenant on September 12, 1864.
