Whereas it is represented to me that there is an indictment pending, against William Stephens (who writes his name W. N. Stephens) of which the within is a substantial copy; and that said Stephens, since the finding of said indictment, did, in good faith, under a certain proclamation, or order of tendering indemnity upon certain terms, return to his
allegiance to the United States. Now, therefore the said William Stephens, alias William N. Stephens, may offer to plead this paper in the court, wherein said indictment is pending, with the additional allegation that he shall have maintained his allegiance to the United States, up to the time of pleading, and, if received, he shall prove the allegations true, then he is fully pardoned for all matters charged in the indictment. Or, if the Court refuse to receive the plea, or hear the proof being offered as aforesaid, then he, the said William Stephens, alias William N. Stephens, if [is] fully pardoned for all matters charged in the indictment.
