[1] ALS, owned by Edward C. Stone, Boston, Mass. General Meade replied the same day, ``Your despatch of 9.50 rec'd. Upon representations made . . . by his Corps commander, I yesterday suspended for one week, the execution of . . . John Thompson, of Company `K' 3d. Maryland Volunteers. . . .
``In compliance with your instructions, I will at once direct that the execution . . . be suspended until further orders from you.'' (DLC-RTL).
Lincoln is in error as to Thompson's first name. General Orders No. 77, Headquarters of the Army of the Potomac, August 19, 1863, orders execution of John Thompson of Company K, Third Maryland Volunteers. The roster of the regiment, however, carries John Thompson as ``dishonorably'' discharged as of February 28, 1863.
