Annotation
[1] Received copy IHi. ALS, RPB. James C. Conkling wrote Lincoln on August 14:
``The unconditional union men of all parties in our State are to hold a Grand Mass Meeting at Springfield on the 3rd day of September next. It would be gratifying to the many thousands who will be present . . . if you would also meet with them. It is stated in the public papers that you will visit the White Mountains and perhaps you can make it convenient to extend your trip to Illinois. . . .
``We intend to make the most imposing demonstration that has ever been held in the Northwest. . . . I know that nothing could add more to the interest of the occasion than your presence
``Can you not give us a favorable reply. . . .'' (DLC-RTL).
