Annotation

[1]   ALS, RPB. General Foster telegraphed Lincoln at 6:10 P.M. on August 13: ``The Capt of the Hudson did not give any particulars. The two steamers passed going in opposite directions. . . . The Hudson hailed in passing saying--- `Have you heard the news. Charleston is taken.' The steamers being by this time past each other nothing further was heard. The Hudson disappeared steering southward. . . . The circumstance induces the belief that the news is not reliable. The Hudson was paddle wheel steamer . . . with New York on her stern indicating that as the Port from which she hailed'' (DLC-RTL).
