Will the Secretary of the Navy please send me the record of conviction in this case & any other information in his power.?

Augt. 12. 1863. A LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   AES, DNA RG 204, U.S. Pardon Attorney, A 439. Lincoln's endorsement is written on an envelope containing papers in the case of James Dillon of New York, convicted of mutiny. A further unsigned endorsement, not Lincoln's, indicates that the ship involved was ``not in the naval service and was most probably a merchant vessel.'' A third endorsement referred the request to the Department of State. See Lincoln to Bates, September 28, infra.
