[1]   AES, DLC-Stanton Papers. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a telegram from Jesse K. Dubois, August 10, 1863, asking an extension of leave for General John A. Logan. A Letter from William P. Dole to John P. Usher, August 9, 1863, explains what Logan was doing: ``I have just seen & conversed with Genl. Logan He is doing much good to our cause here in III. His leave . . . only

lasts 10 or 12 days more See the President and if it is at all consistent . . . get the Leave extended 20 or 30 days longer that he may visit portions of our state. Genl. Logan sd. to me that if he had the leave he would do the work but did not like to ask for the leave himself. . . . Logan calls things by their right names and his speeches will do a world of good in this state as showing the spirit & temper of the army. . . .'' (DLC-RTL).
