Annotation

[1]   LS, PHi.The letter is in John Hay's handwriting, signed by Lincoln. On the draft of this letter preserved in the Lincoln Papers, also in Hay's hand, the deleted name of the person addressed appears to be ``Mrs. Hutter,'' (see similar letter of the same date addressed to Mrs. Hutter, infra). Mrs. Evans' note accompanying the cushion,July 9, 1863,is as follows: ``Will please accept the accompanying Sofa Cushion, which was purchased by subscription, from the table of `The Penn Relief Association for Sick and Wounded Soldiers,' at the Grand Floral Fair recently held in this city.''
