Annotation
[1] AES, The Rosenbach Company, Philadelphia and New York. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of a letter from Grant Goodrich, July 6, 1863, introducing J. G. Hamilton, ``a loyal man & true patriot,'' whose brother-in-law, William T. Smithson, had been imprisoned. The document carries another endorsement in unidentified handwriting as follows: ``Please see `Statutes at Large' 1863; Chapter LXXXI, Sections 2 & 3---pages 755 & 756.'' Smithson had been arrested early in the war and released upon his oath. In May 1863 he was again imprisoned for his dealings in Confederate securities.
