Gen. Stoneman. Washington, Aug. 1863.
I am appealed to in behalf of E. S. Doty, Co. A. 1st. Vermont Cavalry, whose friends do not know where he is but fear he has been executed, or is under sentence of death, somewhere, as a deserter. Records in these cases do not necessarily come, & in this case, none is here. Please ascertain, & inform me if you can, how the case stands. Yours truly A. LINCOLN
