Annotation
[1] ALS-F, Kansas City, Missouri, Star, October 20, 1929. On July 26, 1863, Representative James S. Rollins wrote Lincoln from Columbia, Missouri:
``Major Genl Sterling Price is no smarter than he ought to be, or he never would have been caught in this rebellion. . . .
``He started out a Union man, and I have every reason to believe, his vanity and his ignorance, induced him to drift into the whirlpool of treason.
``Now that the State of Missouri is about fixed---I am inclined to the opinion, that Price would be glad to quit---lay down his arms, and come home. . . . Rest assured (altho' I have no respect for the intellect or the intelligence of the man) it would be a great point gained to get him back. Can't you offer him a free pardon if he will return? If you will say so---I'll try and induce some of his particular friends---to go and have an interview with him. . . .
``We are convalescent in Missouri (All safe for the Union The `Nigger' about played out), and would be well in a short time, if we could just get clear of the reckless Dutch, and Radical Doctors!'' (DLC-RTL).
