Annotation

[1]   Tarbell (Appendix), p. 376. General Meade answered on the same day: ``The execution of the sentence in the case of private `Peter Schalowsky' of Company `B' 45th Regt New York vols was suspended until further orders on the 28th inst. The record of the court martial in the case was forwarded for your action on the same date.'' (DLC-RTL).

Private Peter Schalowsky was one of several soldiers condemned to death whose execution was ordered suspended by Lincoln (see Lincoln to Holt, July 24, supra), and on July 31, remitted in accordance with Meade's recommendation.
