Hon. Secretary of War. Washington, D.C. July 29, 1863.
Dear Sir: I understand the Gov. of New Hampshire is anxious in regard to trouble about the draft, and desires that the 5th N.H. should be sent home on that account. The regiment is now here, going down the Potomac, somewhere, and contains, as I hear, only 115 men. Yours truly, A. LINCOLN

[1] Tracy, p. 228. The Fifth New Hampshire was ordered to Point Lookout, Maryland, on July 26, but its destination was changed to Concord, New Hampshire, where it reported at draft rendezvous on August 3 (Otis F. R. Waite, New Hampshire in the Great Rebellion, p. 288).
