Major Genl. Burnside Washington, D.C.,
Cincinnati, O. July 24. 1863

What, if anything further do you hear from John Morgan?

A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   ALS, RPB. Burnside's reply, received at 11:55 P.M., reported ``conflicting reports as to whereabouts'' of a Confederate raid led by John Hunt Morgan: ``One report places him with[in] ten miles of Cadiz Junction & the other between Antrim & Hendricsburg Shackleford close after him & we will try to have forces in his front whichever report is correct'' (DLC-RTL). At 8 A.M. on July 25, Burnside telegraphed again, ``I can answer your dispatch now

more fully Morgan was four miles from Cadiz at six (6) oclock moving towards the River with our people pursuing him closely & skirmishing with him This information is from Genl Brooks who is at Steubenville I have requested to use the two bodies of Cavalry which I sent from here by Rail Road to Bellair & Cadiz Junction & I hope he will capture him They have both been ordered to close in on Morgan by Rail'' (ibid.).
