[1] Copy, DLC-RTL. Colonel Charles E. Hovey, Thirty-third Illinois Infantry, was appointed brigadier general of Volunteers September 5, 1862, but his appointment expired March 4, 1863. Although strongly recommended by a letter from General William T. Sherman, August 3, 1863, Hovey's nomination was not confirmed by the Senate, and he entered law practice in Washington, D.C.
