I think the Secretary of War better let them have the clothes.

June 28 [27], 1863. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   AES, NHi. LINCOLN's endorsement, apparently misdated, is written on a telegram from Simon Cameron, June 27, 1863, recommending that uniforms be furnished to all men called into state service by Governor Curtin's proclamation of that date. Stanton telegraphed Cameron at 3:10 P.M. on June 27, ``The President has referred your telegram of this date to me. . . . Instructions have been given to the Quartermaster-General to furnish uniforms to State troops upon the requisition of the Governor of the State. You are aware that officers in the field can only issue clothing to persons in the United States Service, and that for State troops such supplies should be called for by the State Executive. . . .'' (OR, I, XXVII, III, 365).
