On the bottom of the page is a note in shorthand, probably by Nicolay, and a longhand transcription as follows: ``Written by the President, but not sent out in the morning of May 6th., after a pouring rain all night and during the morning. Subsequently turned out that on the 6th Hooker had recrossed the river.''
