[1]   AIS, RPB. Herndon's reply to Lincoln's telegram is not in the Lincoln papers and has not been located, but a letter from Herndon to Nicolay, March 3, 1863, requested that, `` . . . If you preserved the letter which I wrote to you declining the office which the Presdt offered me please send it to me. I didn't save a copy. Don't forget to write to me & send the letter.''
