Crittenden, January 19, 1863, enclosing a letter from Governor Yates of Illinois protesting the supposed military assessments against Derrick A. January, prominent merchant of St. Louis, Missouri, for being disloyal. Succeeding endorsements by Curtis (February 2) and Provost Marshal General

Franklin A. Dick (February 3) indicate that although January was disloyal in the early months of the war he had later established his loyalty and was not actually under assessment for disloyalty.
