Annotation

[1]   ALS, RPB. Abram Requa telegraphed at 9 A.M., ``Pray dont act in the case of Lt. Sebring convicted at St. Louis of acts contrary to rules of war before Henry Winter Davis & Moses F. Odell can be heard in his behalf. Please answer by Telegh'' (DLC-RTL). Requa's letter to Lincoln, dated November 2, set forth that his nephew ``Lt. Wm H Sebring a prisoner from the rebel Army has been tried by a court martial at St Louis Mo, and found guilty of the following charge, `violation of the Laws and customs of War.' . . . . such facts will be laid before you, as will I trust cause you to remit his sentence upon his taking the oath of allegiance. . . .'' (Ibid.). The record in Sebring's case contains Lincoln's undated endorsement, infra, but gives no further action by the president.
