No important news. Details to Hooker's night fight do great credit to his commanand [sic], and particularly to the 11th. Corps, and Geary's part of the 12th. No discredit on any. A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] ALS, RPB. On October 28-29, at Wauhatchie, Tennessee, ``about 12. p.m. rebels fell upon Geary, seeking to crush and capture him before succor could be brought up. The moonlight was almost as bright as day . . . and Geary . . . got timely warning. Howard, marching to the relief of Geary, was heavily struck . . . but his corps behaved splendidly. . . . The enemy was successfully repulsed, and withdrew at 4 a.m. . . .'' (Charles A. Dana to Stanton, October 29, OR, I, XXXI, I, 72-73). General John W. Geary commanded the Second Division of the Twelfth Corps, General Oliver O. Howard, the Eleventh Corps.
