[1]   ALS, DLC-RTL. See Lincoln to Stanton, June 10, supra. Lincoln's letter was returned on November 6, 1863, together with a report from Joseph Holt on ``The cases of Col. Lemmon & other officers of the 10th N.Y. Cav. Oct. 22, 1863.''

The report indicated that several of the officers had been restored and that four were regarded unfavorably. Of the four reported unfavorably, Captain John Ordner was restored to rank on February 6, 1864, and killed in action on June 11; Captain Wilkinson W. Paige was restored to rank on March 28, 1864, and killed in action on June 24. Two failed to be restored---Henry Fields and Henry S. Pratt. Colonel John C. Lemmon who had resigned because of ``continued ill health'' on March 26 had been recommissioned on June 11, 1863, but was never mustered again. (DLC-RTL). The dismissal of the officers grew out of insubordination and near mutiny at Elmira, New York, in April, 1863.
