[1] ALS, RPB. See Lincoln to Durant, October 16, supra. Durant telegraphed Lincoln on October 17:

``I sent duplicate of letters of tenth 10th by mail which will explain telegram. On Tuesday will furnish you with documents relative to union pacific R Road & my connection there. Can you give me an audience on that day? I refer to John A. Dix Thurlow Weed & John J. Cisco as to who I am.'' (DLC-RTL).

His letter of the same date reads: ``Enclosed find copy of letters sent you on the 10th inst. Four Corps of Engineers are now at work surveying between the

Missouri River and Salt Lake. As the board of Directors for the Union Pacific R R Co have not been elected, I am, in order to gain time furnishing money to pay for these surveys. The order asked for will only be used in case of necessity.'' (Ibid.).

The enclosures were copies of Durant's letter of October 10 and a letter from George T. M. Davis with which Durant's letter had originally been enclosed.
